Two persons yesterday died in a private hospital in Makurdi, Benue State after drinking and bathing with salt water presumably to prevent spread of the Ebola virus.
This came amidst widespread rumours that drinking and bathing with salt water could prevent spread, a claim that has been disputed by medical experts.
Proprietor of the Ushakaa hospital located behind the Civil Service Commission in Makurdi, Dr. Innocent Gbillah, told our correspondent that the deceased patients were hypertensive and had taken plenty of the salty solution.
According to him, the victims, a male and female, were admitted into the hospital Saturday from different locations in Makurdi after taking the solution and becoming very ill. Dr. Gbillah said his medical personnel did everything possible to help the victims but to no avail as one of them died Tuesday at 7pm while the other died at 5am yesterday.
The Director of Public Health in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Peter Kumba, confirmed the deaths.
