According to reports in the Daily Mail UK on Sunday, Lionel Messi has likened Arsenal’s style of play to Barcelona and warned his side their Champions League last-16 tie is far from over until after a good result from the second leg this new week.
The Gunners trail 2-0 ahead of Wednesday night’s return leg at the Nou Camp, after Messi scored twice at the Emirates, but not only has he praised Arsenal, he believes the team has what it takes to overturn the deficit and progress to the quarter-finals.
‘Arsenal have players more than capable of scoring goals,’ he said.
‘We have put ourselves in a very good position to progress and to reach the quarter-finals but none of the players are thinking that the job is finished.
‘Of course we know the danger that Alexis Sanchez can bring but that is only one of many top quality players they have. The style they play is the most similar to that which we play at Barcelona and for that we have a lot of respect for them.’
Despite that praise, Arsenal still have a huge task ahead of them, especially with Messi revealing his relationship with team-mates Neymar and Luis Suarez is getting better by the game.
‘The understanding between myself, Neymar and Suarez is improving all the time,’ said Messi.
‘It is a real pleasure to be able to play with them and our understanding of each other and the positions we are going to be in is improving all the time.”
