Brief history of the international Women's Day

According to the UN Women Watch, “International Women’s Day (IWD) first emerged from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Since those early years, International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women’s movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women’s rights and participation in the political and economic arenas. Increasingly, International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities”.

Today, March 8 marks the International Women’s Day and DE NORSEMEN KCLUB INTERNATIONAL (DNKI) is joining women all over the world and particularly in Africa, to commemorate it.

DE NORSEMEN KCLUB INTERNATIONAL (DNKI) brings together a cross-section of the world’s brightest men who are goal oriented and share love for one another. Since its inception, DNKI has raised more than $950,000 for children in orphanage homes, prison inmates, scholarships, donations to law enforcement agencies, and many more. Today, DNKI is over 1 million members strong worldwide. From medicine and law to finance, real estate, journalism, fashion and entertainment, the group represents the vast diversity of work, life and passion in the world.

DNKI, on this occasion calls on everyone to be more proactive towards achieving gender equality, empowering women and elevating them politically, economically, socially, and culturally. It hopes amongst other things that, countries should ensure women’s equal participation in all spheres of decision-making, and the equitable distribution of resources.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Akpante Marshal, the International Publicity Secretary of DNKI, expresses the organization’s concern on violence against women (VAW) and girls which takes a variety of forms. He called for a more effective action that will lead to the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.

According to him, “with the current security challenges in the world, DNKI is concerned about VAW in conflict zones, where rape is utilized as a tactic of war. Women and girls continue to be victims particularly due to their sex and status in the society and this violates their dignity and other fundamental human rights. It is indeed sad to know that from Nigeria, Somalia to Iraq and Syria, the bodies of women have been transformed into battlegrounds with girls as young as seven not only targeted but used as weapons by violent extremists. We therefore call on leaders around the world to come together in response to this target of women and girls by these violent extremists. Women have been attacked for trying to exercise their right to education and basic services; they have been raped and turned into sex slaves; they have been given as prizes to fighters, or traded among extremist groups in trafficking networks.”
He also noted that even women living in societies at peace still remain targets of domestic abuse, female genital mutilation and other forms of violence that traumatize them and could damage an entire society and this discrimination remains a thick barrier that must be shattered!
In his closing remarks, he has this to say:
“DE NORSEMEN KCLUB INTERNATIONAL is therefore putting this on the celebration of the International Women’s Day this year with emphasis on the African continent and has tagged it: An African woman is beautiful and tenacious. Over time, she remains the rock of the earth, and is thus worth celebrating.”
